The 1,000 Words series, a bi-monthly reading based on the Oulipo, challenges the writers who accept it to write under certain arbitrary constraints over one month and then to read the results of their labors in public at a bar called the Maiden in the Mist. It works like this: every other month, 4-6 writers and a musician agree to write 250 words per week for four weeks based on a set of pretty twisted prompts--usually a phrase or sentence and a list of words that must be included in that week's effort. At the end of the month, the writers agree to read their findings in public in exchange for a free drink. The archived writings from past readings are available here, and I will post each week's prompts for anyone to see and respond to if they like as I send them to the writers. I encourage anyone who's up for it to post their own responses to the prompts as I provide them. Check out the links to writings by past, present, and future 1,000 Words writers below.

I am a writer, teacher, and mom to Ramona, 21 months. I invented 1,000 Words as a way to prod myself and others into writing more, and the Wildlife Report because I am consistently amazed & charmed by wild creatures who persist in un-wild environments, and I want to keep track of everything. Writing, reading, and keeping a record of our experiences are sacred tasks.
